About the Young Opera Company

Our Young Opera Company brings the art of musical theatre to community and school audiences, and provides a unique experience for our students. The company presents impressive fully staged and costumed productions often complete with orchestral accompaniment - - influenced by the many professional theatre veterans, local aspiring musicians and theatrical talent who provide direction, costuming and set design.

The staff focuses on training children in this distinct art form by performing operas composed for children’s voices. Acting and character skills are developed as well as mastering vocal techniques for complex music. The history of the time period of the production is studied as well as costuming and stagecraft. This assists with developing children's love of this great art form.

The Young Opera Company produced “The Star Child” in March, 2001. A cast of 45 Contra Costa Children’s Chorus students presented this fully costumed, fully staged production for four matinees for Elementary students at the Del Valle Theater, and four public performances.
.

The Young Opera’s repertoire also includes the 1999 production of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, adapted by Barrett Lindsay-Steiner, the national premiere of “The Snow Queen” by John Greer, “The Piper of Hamelin” by John Rutter, “The Miraculous Turnip” and “The Golden Vanity” by Benjamin Britten.
